2012 Weatherby Lake Yacht Club Invitational

June 9 & 10, 2012

Hosted by Weatherby Lake Yacht Club

Vernon Green and Arrested Development (Santana 20 #352) Wins at Weatherby Lake

Weatherby Lake Yacht Club (near Kansas City, MO) hosted their annual Invitational Regatta on June 9th and 10th, 2012.  As in the past, every visiting crew was put up by a member of the community in their houses so there were no expenditures for housing and little for food.  Ten Santana 20s from the Midwest hit the line, six from the lake and four visitors (2 from Oklahoma and 2 from Kansas).  The Sailin’ Sisters from Perry Lake made their maiden voyage in She Worthy and performed above their expectations - finishing 4th in the first race on Sunday.

Races were scored Portsmouth Yardstick.  Winds with gusts up to 22, combined with some sheltered areas having winds as low as 8 knots, made for a challenging regatta for all.  The 60-70 degree shifts, short legs, beats, spinnaker reaches and runs all made mistake free boat and sail handling the key to success.  Five races were held Saturday and three on Sunday.

Racing kicked off Saturday morning under sunny skies, low 90s temperatures, and Beaufort wind strengths from 4 to 5-9.  Genoas were flown for the first three races but, after lunch ashore, blades were hoisted to accommodate the rising winds.  As the day went on the conditions proved to be difficult with winds gusting into the 20’s.  Most boats struggled with the spinnaker in the fluky heavy air.  Every race saw position changes and some lead changes but at the end of the day Vernon Green on Arrested Development held a one point lead over Paul Fetterman on Grendel.

The Weatherby Lake Yacht Club put on a great party Saturday night at the new lakeside facilities with a band, beer, wine, and food aplenty.

Day 2 started with eight boats on the start line but it was no less competitive and the winds were no less challenging.   Arrested Development came out on fire and dominated the fleet for the day.  After scoring 3 bullets on Sunday, Vernon and crew (Stephanie Nguyen and Heidi Ventresca) took home the gold medal with a score of 8.  They also won a custom made S20 companionway board (design courtesy of Dan in Indianapolis who parted out his boat last year).  The bin board is designed to hold drinks, a radio, and beer cans or a winch handle (your choice).  Only one point separates the 4th through 7th boat resulting in a tie breaker to determine the last 2 medals.

The remaining medal winners were:

2nd Place – Paul Fetterman (on Grendel) with John Perlik, and Delaney Stevenson (15).

3rd Place – Paul Harrow (on Chimps in Orbit) with son Truman, wife Stephanie, and Rich Barr (26).

4th Place – Ray Staton (on Firefly) with Hal Parrott, and Tony Bohn (39).

5th Place – Cooper Lehr and dad Scott (39).

The regatta was a huge success and will go a long way towards encouraging the establishment of a fleet at Perry Lake to complement the six boats at Weatherby.

Weatherby Lake Yacht Club invites Santana 20 sailors to compete in our Invitational regatta on June 9 and 10.  The city of Weatherby Lake and it's eponymously named lake is located just 15 miles NW of downtown Kansas City, Missouri.  Last year we had 9 Santana 20s and hope to improve on that number for this year.  Anyone interested in participating should read the Notice of Race promptly as there are several important notes regarding Zebra mussels, housing for visiting racers, etc.
