2008 SCYA Midwinter Regatta

SCYA Midwinter Regatta

Santana 20's Hosted by Mission Bay YC

February 20 & 21, 2010

With the leftover swell from the storm that passed through the area on Friday, there was plenty of slop and chop but not uniform in size or direction.  However, there was plenty of wind to keep things charging along.  Saturday’s weather turned out to be perfect with winds ranging from 10-12 for the first race, 8-10 for the second race and 8-5 for the third.  Racing was on the ocean just to the west of the Mission Bay Yacht Club yacht club.  There were a few breakers at the mouth of the jetty but nothing too scary for us however it seemed to keep the power boat fleet at the dock.

On Saturday, three boats came to the start line.  The best racing was between Keenan and Wright who enjoyed a number of tacking duels nearly every final beat (or run as we finished a few races downwind).  Sunday we had two more boats join us, putting 5 on the line.  All was fine until about mid way through the second race of the day when a storm/microburst blew through on the first beat.  For about 10 minutes we had winds in the 20+ range.  Good fun.  Perhaps not as much fun as the Lasers were having as they were already heading downwind, but more than the catamarans had as all but one of them had just rounded the weather mark and all but one flipped.  Looked like a good old “cow flipping” contest.

The next Santana 20 racing in San Diego is the San Diego NOOD Regatta March 20 thru 21 (no racing on Friday the 19th for the Santana 20 fleet) which is also the SW Regional Champs!  Check with the local fleet as Santana 20’s may only be racing on Saturday and Sunday.  We’re looking forward to more boats, the same courses, and the first signs of spring.

Sitting a day later in the Frankfurt (Germany!) airport, it’s easy to forget just how lucky we are in San Diego to be sailing in 12 knots of breeze and sunny conditions. Signing off from cold, rainy, snowy, sleeting Europe…..

See you at the NOOD”s on March 20/21 for the SW Regional’s!

Regards,

Eric Kownacki

Going through water withdrawl? The SCYA Midwinter Regatta at Mission Bay Yacht Club is coming soon...February 20-21. Last year we had 14 boats and the sailing was spectacular: ocean sailing, temps in the 60’s, and great wind.  And as always, for those of you that make the trip down, we’ll make every effort to find you housing with our local sailors.
