Memorial Day Regatta
May 29 & 30, 2010
Hosted by Eugene Yacht Club
Report by Mark Forrest
After a wet wet month, Fern Ridge Lake got a last minute reprieve with a mix of clouds and sun forecast for Memorial Day weekend. Saturday's breeze was on the light side for the twenty Santana 20 class competitors, but there was plenty for fun and fair racing. This was perhaps the first time in history that three consecutive races were started into an atypical northeasterly. Keeping a hot angle and good boat speed downwind was the order of the day. After three races, Jason Crowson, Andrew Kerr and Adam Mazurkiewicz on Disaster Area had built a solid lead with just six total points. The field was still tight, however, with the next five boats separated by only five points, H20 Boat (16), Fusion (17), Q (18), Chicken Boat (20) and Guano Girl (21).
Steak dinner was ready as soon as we hit the docks and Fleet 19 tapped a keg from local favorite Ninkasi, creating a well documented gravitational pull toward Ron Fish's trailer. Guitarist Olem Alves and his "Inner Limits" trio started dinner off with a set of jazzy standards on the clubhouse deck and then funked it up it as day faded to moonlight. Those who stuck around the campfire can attest they rocked the house.
This was the first time I have stayed overnight at the club, and I have to say it was a beautiful place to wake up in the morning. As I took a walk around the lake in the early morning light listening to the birds, it was positively serene. Too serene it seems. The lake was still glassy at the scheduled 10am start time. Light, variable, and unreliable easterlies plagued the race area all morning. By early afternoon, the race committee gave up hope of a reliable breeze and abandoned racing. Luckily our first class race committee headed by Rich Johnson, along with Rich Aaring and John Franklin had done a stellar job completing three good races on day one.
Congratulations to Team Disaster Area and thank you to everyone for coming out. Please join Fleet 19 in Eugene for Emerald Cub Regatta, June 26-27th and for Harvest Day Regatta, September 11-12th.
