|Turkey Day Regatta
Nov. 15-16, 2007
Shawn Prestige and his fellow Dana Point YC Junior sailors on “Duster” showed a lot of poise and perseverance in capturing the 2007 MBYC Turkey Day Regatta held on November 17/18 in San Diego. In weather way different from the rest of the country (sunny, winds WNW 5-15 knots), Shawn sailed smart, kept out of the kelp, and hung in there to prevail by the end of Sunday to pluck a flock of turkeys (OK, more like Cornish game hens) to proudly set on the table the following week. No silver given out here – only frozen game. Bob Martin, sailing “Alexa”, took an early lead by being quick off the line on all three races on Saturday. The alternating light air/puffy conditions coupled with long downwind legs, never allowed the leaders to get too far ahead and most of the time the leeward mark roundings had all six boats grouped close together. Bob picked up two bullets on the first two races, with John Weightman finishing second on race 1 and John Porteous on “Sparkey” with a second on race 2. Race 3 was very shifty and Ellen Schmidt on “Purple Haze” picked up a sweet righty that launched her to a bullet, with John Weightmann second. On Sunday, the winds blew a steady 10-15 and Shawn Prestige and crew got their “A” game going. They finished exceptionally well with a third and two bullets in some gusty conditions and plenty of kelp in the Bay. Extremely close port/starboard crossing were the norm on the upwind legs, and the leaders played the puffs to their advantage and minimized boat handling errors. Steering clear of the kelp and keeping the shiny side up paid off in the end and the Dana Point Juniors made all of us proud with a great effort. Way to go guys!!!
