2007 CSSA Spring Open Hobok/Tillotson Memorial Regatta

Hosted by Windycrest Sailing Club

May 19-20, 2007

Eric Kownacki traveled to Windycrest Sailing Club, the site of the 2007 National Championship Regatta, to compete in the CSSA Spring Open Hobok/Tillotson Memorial Regatta.

Thanks go to Eric and crew who brought with them Southern California Weather for the Regatta. Both days were upper seventy degree temperature with South wind blowing 8 to 15Mph.

Day 1 wind patterns were variable breeze conditions that would blow in the 10-15mph range for about 15 minutes then drop to 8-12Mph for about 15 minutes.  Stronger puffs would blown in that were typically a port tack lift resulting in most boats fighting for the left side of the course.  Race 1 was a dead heat between Teams Kownacki, Ziegler & McNamara.  Team Ziegler took the gun with Team Kownacki who had trailed the leaders made a 6 boat length comeback on the final windward leg to pin McNamara out on the finish for 2nd.  Race 2 was lead by Team McNamara on all legs until a broken halyard cleat proved fatal at the last leeward mark rounding allowing Team Kownacki pull in a first place closely followed by Team Williams, Team Baggett and Team Ziegler.  Race 3 was another victory Team Kownacki pulled in on the final legs of the race.  At the end of day one Kownacki had a significant point lead, but all sailors felt that the racing was much closer than reflected on the score sheet.

Day 2 was all Team Kownacki.  The wind speed and direction were the same but the puffs saw little if any shifting to them.  The first start of the day was a general recall, the second start to race 4 was won by Kownacki and they never looked back. Team Baggett were hindered by an OCS resulting in a restart at least 3 minutes after the rest of the fleet.  They did make an impressive comeback finishing within 60 seconds of the leader.    Team Kownacki was uncatchable in both races of day 2.

Congratulations to Team Kownacki on their impressive performance.  All of the local sailors felt their racing improved to a new level as a result of the new level of competition. Hopefully this will result in some local Oklahoma boats making a run for a gold insignia on their main sail.
