2005 Western Regional Championships

Hosted by Seattle YC

May 14 & 15th, 2005

The 2005 Western Regional's was a terrific event, with great wind and good competition. The event was part of the annual SOCKS Regatta (Seattle One Design, Centerboard and Keelboat Series) held out of Shilshole Marina in Seattle Washington. The racing was challenging and conditions were excellent with Eugene YC taking 3 boats into the top 5. Team Disaster Area was once again the Tiger Woods of the regatta, with close racing all weekend. Saturday showed winds of 10 to 15 knots at the start, and the fleet stayed pretty consistent most of the day. After a front passed through, the breeze began to slack with the final race on Saturday abandoned as the breeze settled into the under 3 knot range. Sunday brought the fleet tightly together, and it boiled down to who could maneuver the best on the downwind legs. With winds at 12 gusting to 18 knots, Disaster Area put on the Turbo charger and showed everyone their talent in strong breeze. With everyone changed out to Jibs at the first race on Sunday, Disaster Area stayed with the #1, and gave us a show on shifting gears. Steve Orsini was nipping at the trophy until the wind picked up Sunday, and did all they could to stay with Disaster Area. Great show Chris, Andrew and Bill. Our hats off in amazement of your speed.

The SOCKS regatta gave our class great exposure on the water. With a better S-20 turnout than last year, we showed the Northwest sailboat racing community that our class is strong and growing. I want to thank the road warriors from Eugene that took the time to attend the Western Regionals. Your teams helped to make this Regatta one of the better regatta's we have held in the past couple of years. From fleet 16, we thank you very much for being a part of this Regatta, and look forward to seeing more of Fleet 19 here in Seattle for the 2006 SOCKS Regatta. Thanks go out the Seattle Yacht Club for sponsoring the event, CYC for putting on some great racing, and cheers to the wind gods for giving us a mini warm up for the upcoming 2005 Nationals at Cascade Locks.
