Southwest Regional Championships/Lighthouse Charity Regatta a huge success!!!

The 2005 Southwest Regional was hosted by The Oklahoma City boat club in conjunction with their annual Lighthouse charity regatta on June 25 & 26.  Winds on Lake Hefener were 8 to 10 miles per hour both days, clear sky’s and mid 90 degree weather, perfect for racing Santana 20’s.  The overall regatta turnout was great and the Santana 20’s made up the largest fleet.  Boats came from Norman, Tulsa and Dan Holcolmb and crew drove all the way from Amarillo Texas!  After 3 races on day one, it was still anybody’s race.  Britt Williams, on Fayest and IV McNamara on Nice Aft both of Windycrest Sailing Club in Tulsa had 8 points each, Jim Blakewell on Supernatural and Bob Heaslet on B3 both from Oklahoma City Boat Club had 9 points each.  Sunday was the day to shine and it was still anyone’s regatta. Race 4 Sunday morning proved painful for Team Fayest with an OCS on the first race of the day.  Supernatural got the bullet with Nice Aft immediately behind finished out race 4 with two boats tied for ten points.  Race 5 was sailed immediately following, Team Fayest walked away from the fleet, but the best they could finish the regatta at this point was 2nd.  The regatta winner was down to 2 boats battling for 1st place, Supernatural and Nice Aft. On the last leeward leg a bad Spinnaker hoisting on Supernatural gave Nice Aft an apparent advantage coming into the last leg. A broken halyard shackle resulted in a jib halyard up the mast on Nice Aft almost proved fatal.  Team Nice Aft secured the spinnaker halyard on the Genoa, Supernatural and Nice Aft were then neck and neck at the beginning of the last leg.  Splitting sides on the lower end of the course did not pay any favors to either boat.  Finally about halfway up the leg, team Nice Aft executed a textbook lee bow maneuver on Supernatural forcing them to tack off onto the headed tack securing a 6 boat length victory for Team Nice Aft at the finish line.  The race was run very well and all the competitions had a great time.  If you missed out on the fun this year, next years South West Regional is sure to be just as much if not more!
