2005 Midwinter Regatta

February 19 & 20, 2005

Hosted by Balboa YC

Mother Nature 1, SYCA Regatta 0.

The SCYA regatta suffered cancellations at a variety of venues up and down the coast due to the heavy winter weather.  In the case of the Santana 20 fleet sailing out of Balboa Yacht Club, the racers and race committee agreed to cancel racing on Saturday morning.  Much to their chagrin, the weather cleared just about the time that they would have been starting the first race.  Oh well.  On Sunday, the winds were somewhere around 15knots at the start of the first race.  Surprisingly, most boats raced with their genoas - purportedly to help power thru the chop.  Jeff Keenan, who was sailing short handed, decided to sail downwind with his genoa wing-and-wing instead of flying the spinnaker.  "We were able to surf downwind and keep up with Doug who was flying his spinnaker.  That paid off when Doug encountered troubles taking down his spinnaker, allowing us to pass into the lead."

Race 2 and three were in equal, if not stronger winds.  Damage reports include a lost his Windex flung off the top of the mast and a blown out upper shroud on Mighty Mouse while sailing back to the club in 20 knots of wind.

Asked if he would do it again, Jeff Keenan replied "I don't think I'd go back out if I had to do it over again but I've a lot more respect for Santana 20s now and I'm definitely going to make some changes to my control lines to better handle sailing in heavy weather."
